Usability and Joy
Designing software for the toughest user – the child
Abstract:
This talk discusses the design of educational software for the very young. It examines two classic programs: Magic Theatre- for movie making and Language Adventure – for foreign language learning. Live demos show how user interface, stories and joy are critical elements that determine the use, usability and usefulness of the programs.
Dr. Joseph Adler is CEO of Instinct Corporation, an educational software company specializing in creative and entertaining products that develop communication skills. He is also Consulting Professor at Stanford University, where he co-founded the MetaMediaLab which focuses on applying digital technology to the Arts and Humanities.
He has served as General Manager of the Intelligent Network Operation at Hewlett Packard. He was also CEO and Co-founder of Eon Systems Inc, developer of the first Windows-based distributed monitoring system for IP networks. Prior to that, Joseph Adler was Co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing at Integrated Office Systems, which developed the first portable computer with integrated voice and data communications. He has worked as a Consultant Psychologist in the Silicon Valley and with McCann Erickson in London. He has lectured at Stanford Business School and Hayward University and also worked at the Tate Gallery.
Joseph Adler holds a Ph.D and MSc. from Manchester University in Liberal Studies in Science and a BSc. from Newcastle University in Engineering and Art Studies.
